Mediterranean Beaches
Mediterranean beaches and protected Marchica Lagoon
Nador offers two distinct coastal experiences, catering to different visitor preferences. The Marchica Lagoon is a 25-square-kilometer sheltered body of water separated from the Mediterranean by a sandy barrier. Since 2010, this area has developed into a sustainable eco-tourism site featuring beach resort infrastructure and clean swimming areas. It provides a quiet, family-friendly environment, particularly for wildlife observation. Flamingos are most visible between October and March, making this period ideal for nature enthusiasts. The lagoon’s calm waters and protected status create a serene atmosphere distinct from the open sea.
In contrast, Charrana Beach faces the open Mediterranean and offers a more classic beach experience. It features calm seas and a lively local atmosphere, popular with both residents and visitors from the nearby Spanish enclave of Melilla, located just 13 kilometers away. This beach is accessible via Nador Airport or by road and train from Oujda. The area sees vibrant local activity during July and August, when the Moroccan diaspora returns home. For swimming and warm seas, the period from June to September is recommended. While specific admission fees and opening hours are not documented, the beaches are public spaces integrated into the local community. Travelers can expect a mix of natural beauty and cultural interaction, reflecting Nador’s unique position at the crossroads of Moroccan and European influences. The region remains an underrated destination, offering authentic coastal experiences away from the larger tourist hubs of Morocco.
