Fes-Meknes
Step back in time through Morocco’s spiritual heart and imperial cities, where ancient medinas, vast cedar forests, and vibrant artisan traditions converge.
About Fes-Meknes
Fes-Meknes is the cultural and historical backbone of Morocco, home to the country’s most revered spiritual centers and some of its most impressive imperial cities. This region offers travelers an immersive journey into traditional Moroccan life, from the labyrinthine souks of Fes to the imposing ramparts of Meknes.
Located in north-central Morocco, the Fes-Meknes region serves as the nation's primary cultural and educational hub. Bounded by the Mediterranean coast to the north, the Rif Mountains to the east, and the Middle Atlas to the south, this diverse landscape supports a rich tapestry of history and nature. The region is dominated by two major imperial cities: Fes, widely considered Morocco’s cultural capital, and Meknes, known for its monumental architecture and serene atmosphere. Fes is famous for Fes el-Bali, the world’s largest car-free urban zone, where centuries-old craftsmanship thrives in workshops dedicated to leather, ceramics, and textiles. Meknes, though less crowded, boasts the impressive Bab Mansour gate and the nearby ruins of Volubilis, a remarkably preserved Roman site. Beyond the cities, the region offers stunning natural escapes, including the Middle Atlas Mountains, where visitors can hike through cedar forests home to Barbary macaques or explore the serene Lake Sebnane. The best times to visit are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), when temperatures are mild and ideal for exploring the medinas and hiking trails. Getting around is straightforward via Morocco’s efficient train network, with frequent connections between Fes and Meknes, as well as buses linking smaller towns and rural attractions. Once in the cities, walking is the best way to experience the medinas, though taxis are readily available for longer distances.Top Destinations in Fes-Meknes
