Draa-Tafilalet
Morocco’s vast desert heartland, where ancient ksour stand guard over endless palm groves and the Atlas Mountains meet the Sahara.
About Draa-Tafilalet
Stretching from the foothills of the High Atlas to the edge of the Sahara, Draa-Tafilalet is a land of striking contrasts and profound tranquility. It offers an authentic glimpse into traditional Moroccan life, defined by its sprawling oasis networks, historic trade routes, and the warm hospitality of its Berber communities.
Located in south-central Morocco, the Draa-Tafilalet region serves as the natural gateway between the Middle Atlas and the Sahara Desert. Bounded by the High Atlas Mountains to the north and west, it encompasses some of the country's most dramatic landscapes and historic towns. The region is dominated by two main urban hubs: Errachidia, the administrative capital and primary transit point for desert expeditions, and Erfoud, known globally for its fossil deposits and proximity to the Merzouga dunes. Further south lies Zagora, a historic oasis town situated along the banks of the Draa River, Morocco’s longest river. The region’s cultural heritage is deeply rooted in Berber traditions, visible in its distinctive earthen architecture, including the impressive ksour (fortified granaries) and kasbahs that dot the landscape. Travelers can explore the UNESCO-recognized Ksar of Ait Benhaddou nearby, though the local ksars of Khamlia and Goulmima offer equally compelling, less-crowded experiences. The landscape is a photographer’s dream, featuring the towering Erg Chebbi dunes of Merzouga, the rugged Todra Gorge, and the Dades Valley with its unique rock formations. Nature enthusiasts will appreciate the region’s biodiversity, particularly the date palm groves that line the river valleys, providing vital shade and sustenance. The best time to visit is during the spring (March to May) or autumn (September to November), when temperatures are mild and suitable for hiking and camping. In summer, temperatures can soar past 45°C (113°F), making travel uncomfortable. Winter nights, however, can be surprisingly cold in the desert. Access is primarily via road from Marrakech through the Tizi n'Tichka pass or from Oujda via the east. Once in the region, a rented 4x4 or organized tour is recommended for exploring the remote desert trails and mountain passes.Top Destinations in Draa-Tafilalet
