Tamegroute
Historic Berber village known for green pottery and ancient library
Tamegroute is a village situated in the Drâa-Tafilalet region of southern Morocco, approximately 20 kilometers south of Zagora along the N9 highway. Its name, translating to 'Final Place Before the Desert' in Tamazigh, reflects its strategic location at the edge of the Sahara. Historically, Tamegroute has been a center of Islamic learning and Sufi spirituality, particularly associated with the Shadhili order. The village is famous for its ancient Koranic library, which contains valuable manuscripts and serves as a testament to the region's scholarly past. Another key attraction is the traditional pottery workshops, where artisans produce distinctive green-glazed ceramics using local clay and a unique firing technique that has been passed down through generations. The landscape around Tamegroute is characterized by lush palm groves along the Draa River, contrasting with the arid desert beyond. Visitors can explore the village's narrow streets, visit the local mosque, and interact with residents to learn about Amazigh culture and traditions. Activities in Tamegroute include pottery making workshops, guided tours of the library, and day trips to nearby oases and desert landscapes. The village also serves as a base for exploring the surrounding natural beauty, including hiking in the nearby mountains and visiting traditional kasbahs. Getting to Tamegroute is possible by road from Zagora or Ouarzazate, with regular bus services available. The best time to visit is during the spring (March to May) or autumn (September to November) when the weather is mild and pleasant for outdoor activities. Summer can be extremely hot, while winter nights can be cold. Accommodation options are limited but include guesthouses and riads that offer authentic local experiences.
