Agadir

Agadir is a major urban centre and the capital of the Souss-Massa region, situated on the Atlantic coast of Morocco. Its history is marked by a significant turning point in 1960, when a devastating earthquake destroyed much of the city, leading to its complete reconstruction with modern, earthquake-resistant architecture. This event shaped Agadir into a planned city with wide boulevards, parks and a focus on tourism. Before the earthquake, Agadir was a small fishing port, but it has since evolved into a major resort destination. The Agadir Museum, sometimes called the Memory Agadir Museum, recalls the disaster and the resilience of the people who rebuilt the city.

Key attractions include the Agadir Beach, a 10-kilometre stretch of fine sand that is ideal for swimming and sunbathing, backed by a promenade of cafés and restaurants. The Kasbah of Agadir, or Agadir Oufella, perched on a hill overlooking the city, offers panoramic views of the bay and the port. Only its walls survived the earthquake, and an inscription at the gate carries the national motto in Arabic. The Souk El Had is one of the largest open-air markets in Africa, where visitors can find spices, textiles, leather goods and local crafts. The Marina d'Agadir is a modern complex featuring yachts, restaurants and shops, providing a sophisticated nightlife and dining scene. The Mosque of Agadir, in the Nouveau Talborjt district, and the Valley of the Birds, a small park with aviaries, add quieter stops.

Beyond the city, the hills of Ida-Ou-Tanane are close enough for day trips. Ancient almond groves, argan forests and terraced Amazigh villages cover the slopes of the Western High Atlas, and the Imouzzer Ida Ou Tanane area has limestone canyons and waterfalls that flow after rain. Tamraght, a small village a short drive north of Agadir, is known for its relaxed surf scene, while Souss-Massa National Park, to the south, protects coastal wetlands, dunes and rare birds. A trip inland reveals a different Morocco from the resort.

Activities in Agadir include surfing, particularly in nearby Taghazout, camel rides on the beach, golf and hiking in the surrounding hills, where visitors can walk to natural pools and enjoy views of the valleys. The region is also famous for argan oil, and visitors can tour cooperatives to learn how the nuts are cracked, roasted and pressed by hand. Water sports along the beach include jet skiing, paddle boarding and kayaking, while spas and thalassotherapy centres offer treatments that make use of seawater.

Getting to Agadir is convenient via Agadir-Al Massira Airport, which connects to major European and Moroccan cities. The city is also accessible by road from Marrakech, a journey of several hours over the Atlas or along the coast. The best time to visit is during the spring (March to May) or autumn (September to November) when the weather is warm and sunny but not excessively hot. Summer can be hot, while winter is mild and pleasant, and the sea stays cool for most of the year. Accommodation ranges from luxury beachfront resorts to budget-friendly hotels, catering to a wide range of visitors.
