Dades Gorge

Dades Gorge is a geological masterpiece in the Drâa-Tafilalet region of southern Morocco, situated between the High Atlas and the Anti-Atlas mountains. The gorge was carved over millennia by the Dades River, which rises in the High Atlas and flows on toward the Draa basin and the edge of the Sahara. The landscape is dominated by towering limestone and sandstone cliffs, which have been eroded into unique shapes, including the iconic 'Monkey Fingers' and 'The Castle.' These formations are the result of differential erosion, where softer rock layers have worn away faster than the harder caprock, leaving columns, ledges and rounded buttresses in shades of rust, orange and pink.

The area has historically been a transit route for caravans and local tribes, with several kasbahs (fortified villages) dotting the landscape, serving as defensive structures and storage for grain. Built from rammed earth and straw, they blend with the rock and rise in square towers above the fields. Today, the Dades Gorge is a major tourist destination, particularly for those driving the 'Road of a Thousand Kasbahs' (R704), the long road that links the oases of the south with villages tucked into side valleys. The valley road carries on above the town of Boumalne Dades, climbing through hairpin bends that are among the best known in the country.

Key attractions include the various viewpoints along the winding road, where visitors can stop to look down on the river and across to the opposite wall. The best known viewpoint stands near the series of tight switchbacks, and cafés beside the road offer tea and a seat in the shade. At the top of the first section, the valley narrows, and the cliffs close in, giving a sense of the scale of the canyon. These points are better in the morning or late afternoon, when the low sun brings out the colours and shadows.

The 'Monkey Fingers' are a popular spot for hiking and photography, offering a challenging climb and rewarding vistas. Rock climbers use selected routes on the walls, while walkers prefer the gentler tracks beside the stream, where irrigation channels, small plots of barley and walnut trees mark the lower valley. The path can be followed for several hours, and local guides arrange longer routes across the upper plateaus to nomad camps and other villages.

Activities in the gorge include hiking, rock climbing and exploring the nearby Berber villages, where visitors can see how families use the river for farming and share tea with hosts. The region is also known for its almond trees, which bloom in early spring, adding a splash of colour to the arid landscape, and for its rose cultivation lower in the valley. Birdwatchers will find a good number of species along the river and in the surrounding scrub.

Getting to Dades Gorge is typically done by road from Ouarzazate, a journey of about 1.5 to 2 hours, or from Tinghir, which lies to the east. The road is well maintained but features many switchbacks, requiring careful driving. The best time to visit is during the spring (March to May) or autumn (September to November) when the weather is mild and pleasant for outdoor activities. Summer can be extremely hot, while winter nights can be cold and snow may fall on the higher parts. Accommodation options range from guesthouses in Boumalne Dades to more secluded riads within the gorge, offering authentic experiences for visitors, many with terraces facing the cliffs.
