Chefchaouen is a town in the Rif Mountains of northwestern Morocco, renowned for its blue-washed buildings. Founded in 1471 by Moulay Ali Ben Rachid, a local leader, the town was established as a fortress to defend against Portuguese invasions. Over time, it became a refuge for Muslims and Jews expelled from Spain, leading to a cultural blend of Andalusian and Berber traditions. The town remained closed to outsiders for centuries, and only came under Spanish control in 1920, until independence in 1956. The tradition of painting walls blue is often connected with the Jewish refugees of the 20th century, though local explanations differ.

The medina, or old town, is the centre of Chefchaouen, characterised by narrow, winding streets and buildings painted in various shades of blue. This aesthetic has made the town a favourite among photographers and visitors. The streets are steep and cobbled, and every few steps open onto a new courtyard, stair or fountain. Early morning is the quietest time to walk, before groups arrive.

Key attractions begin at Place Outa el-Hammam, the main square, where cafés and restaurants fill with locals and guests. Beside it stands the Kasbah, now a museum with an ethnographic collection, displaying historical items and offering a glimpse into the town's past, with a garden courtyard and a tower with views. The Great Mosque, located on the main square, features a simple yet elegant design with an unusual octagonal tower, and non-Muslim visitors usually admire it from outside. The Spanish Mosque, situated on a hill above the town, is no longer in use as a place of prayer and offers panoramic views of Chefchaouen and the surrounding mountains, making it a popular spot for sunset viewing, after a walk of around half an hour from the old town.

At the eastern edge of the medina, the Ras El Ma spring pours out of the hillside and feeds small channels and laundry basins. Women still wash clothes and carpets by the water, and the area is a pleasant place to walk. The souk, within the old medina, sells woollen rugs, blankets, pottery and jewellery made by local artisans, as well as local goat cheese and honey.

Activities in Chefchaouen include hiking in the nearby Talassemtane National Park, which features lush forests, waterfalls and hiking trails. The Akchour Waterfalls, a short drive from the town, are a popular destination for swimming and picnicking, reached by a path along a river gorge and over a natural rock arch known as the Bridge of God. Visitors can also explore local markets and take cooking classes. The town is known for its traditional Andalusian music, which is often performed in local cafes and restaurants on festive occasions.

Getting to Chefchaouen is possible by bus from major cities like Tangier, Tetouan and Fez. The journey offers scenic views of the Rif Mountains. The best time to visit is during the spring (March to May) or autumn (September to November) when the weather is mild and pleasant for outdoor activities. Summer can be hot, while winter may bring cold temperatures and snow. Accommodation options range from traditional riads to modern hotels, catering to various budgets. The local cuisine features traditional Moroccan dishes with a focus on fresh, local ingredients, including tagines, bissara soup and goat cheese. Chefchaouen is a compelling destination for visitors seeking a quiet, authentic Moroccan experience.
