Asilah

Asilah is a fortified town on the Atlantic coast of northwestern Morocco, about 45 km south of Tangier. Its history dates back to ancient times, with origins as a Phoenician city known as Zêli, later Romanized as Zilis. The town's current character was significantly shaped by the Portuguese, who took it in the 15th century and built the ramparts and gateworks that remain intact today. After the Portuguese left, the town was repopulated by Andalusian refugees, adding to its mixed heritage, and later it became a base for local rulers, including the lord who built the Raisuni Palace overlooking the sea. The Borj el Kamra, a tower on the ramparts, and the main gates give the medina a clear outline.

In the late 20th century, Asilah turned into an artistic centre, most notably through the efforts of the Moina Assilah Foundation, which started the tradition of painting murals on the white walls of the medina. This initiative has turned the town into a living canvas, with colourful frescoes adorning buildings and doors, and artists from many countries have taken part. The Asilah Arts Festival, held annually in August and often called the International Moussem of Asilah, brings concerts, exhibitions and workshops to the squares, and visitors planning to attend should reserve rooms in advance.

Key attractions include the medina itself, a maze of white streets and blue doors, and the ramparts, which offer panoramic views of the ocean. The Kasbah of Asilah, within the walled town, now holds exhibitions and collections related to the town's history and the arts. The Blue Gate, Bab Asilah, is one of the historic entrances to the medina, and the Sidi Mansour Mosque is a historic religious building inside the walls, best admired from the outside by non-Muslim visitors unless access is clearly signed. The sunset viewpoints on the bastions, facing the Atlantic Ocean, are the best place to end the day, when the white walls turn pink.

The town is also home to several art galleries and artisan workshops, where painters, ceramicists and weavers show and sell their work. The Asilah Mural Project continues to change the look of the lanes, so each visit differs from the last. Visitors can walk the entire circuit of the walls in less than an hour and spend the rest of the time browsing the small shops, which sell crafts, textiles and paintings at fair, negotiable prices.

Activities in Asilah include walking through the medina to admire the street art, visiting the beach, which runs beside the old walls, and enjoying fresh seafood at coastal restaurants, where grilled fish, calamari and prawns are the staples. The town also makes a pleasant base for exploring the Atlantic shore, and the city of Tangier and the Hercules Caves are within an easy drive. Farther along the coast toward Tetouan lies the resort town of M'diq.

Getting to Asilah is easy from Tangier, with regular bus and train services. The best time to visit is during the spring (April to June) or autumn (September to October) when the weather is mild and pleasant. Summer can be hot and crowded, while winter may bring rain and strong sea winds. Accommodation ranges from traditional riads to modern hotels, offering a range of experiences for visitors.
