Asilah
Artistic coastal town with white medina and Atlantic sunset views
Asilah is a fortified town on the northwest tip of the Atlantic coast of Morocco, about 31 km south of Tangier. Its history dates back to ancient times, with origins as a Phoenician city known as Zêli, later Romanized as Zilis. The town's current character was significantly shaped by the Portuguese, who occupied it in the 15th century and built the ramparts and gateworks that remain fully intact today. After the Portuguese were expelled, the town was repopulated by Andalusian refugees, adding to its cultural tapestry. In the late 20th century, Asilah underwent a transformation into an artistic center, most notably through the efforts of the Moina Assilah Foundation, which initiated the tradition of painting murals on the white walls of the medina. This initiative has turned the town into a living canvas, with colorful frescoes adorning the buildings. Key attractions include the medina itself, a maze of white streets and blue doors, and the ramparts, which offer panoramic views of the ocean. The Kasbah of Asilah, now a museum, houses artifacts related to the town's history and the arts. The town is also home to several art galleries and the Asilah Arts Festival, held annually in August, which attracts artists and visitors from around the world. Activities in Asilah include walking through the medina to admire the street art, visiting the beach, and enjoying fresh seafood at coastal restaurants. The nearby town of M'diq is also accessible for additional leisure activities. Getting to Asilah is easy from Tangier, with regular bus and train services. The best time to visit is during the spring (April to June) or autumn (September to October) when the weather is mild and pleasant. Summer can be hot, while winter may bring rain. Accommodation ranges from traditional riads to modern hotels, offering a range of experiences for visitors.
