L'Oriental
Discover the rugged beauty and vibrant culture of Morocco's eastern frontier, where the Atlas Mountains meet the Algerian border.
About L'Oriental
L'Oriental is a region defined by its dramatic landscapes and rich Berber heritage, offering a stark yet beautiful contrast to Morocco's coastal cities. From the snow-capped peaks of the Middle Atlas to the arid plains of the east, this area provides an authentic glimpse into the traditional lifestyle of rural Morocco.
Located in the northeastern corner of Morocco, L'Oriental borders Algeria to the east and is bounded by the Middle Atlas mountains to the west and north. This expansive region is characterized by its diverse topography, ranging from fertile valleys and high-altitude plateaus to semi-desert landscapes. The capital, Oujda, serves as the primary economic and transportation hub, connecting the region to the rest of the country and North Africa. Other significant towns include Berkane, known for its citrus orchards, and Taourirt, a historic gateway near the Algerian border. The region is a haven for nature enthusiasts and cultural explorers alike. The Ziz Valley, with its massive date palm groves, offers a stunning oasis experience amidst the arid surroundings. The Middle Atlas mountains provide opportunities for hiking, skiing in winter, and visiting ancient cedar forests home to the Barbary macaque. Culturally, L'Oriental is a melting pot of Arab and Berber influences, visible in its traditional souks, artisanal crafts, and warm hospitality. Visitors can explore the impressive Kasbahs of Taourirt and N'Kob, which reflect the region's strategic importance in Moroccan history. The best time to visit is during the spring (March to May) or autumn (September to November) when temperatures are mild and ideal for outdoor activities. Summer can be extremely hot, particularly in the eastern plains, while winters can be cold in the mountainous areas. Travelers typically reach L'Oriental via Taza or via the major highway from Fez to Oujda. While public buses connect major towns, renting a car is highly recommended for exploring the remote villages, wadis, and natural reserves at your own pace.Top Destinations in L'Oriental
