Erg Chebbi Dunes
150-meter Sahara dunes near Merzouga
Erg Chebbi is a vast sea of sand dunes located on the western edge of the Sahara Desert in Morocco. Spanning approximately 28 kilometers north-to-south and 5 to 7 kilometers east-to-west, the dunes rise up to 150 meters from the surrounding rocky desert. The nearest town is Merzouga, situated on the western lee of the dunes, which serves as the primary hub for tourism. Due to this proximity, the dunes are often referred to as the "dunes of Merzouga."
Visitors typically arrive in Merzouga, where hotels and auberges line the dunes. The primary activity is camel trekking, with many companies offering overnight trips to permanent campsites on the outer sections of the erg. This allows travelers to experience the silence and scale of the desert, often sleeping under the stars. The landscape offers dramatic views, particularly at sunrise and sunset, when the sand shifts in color from gold to deep orange.
Historically, the region is connected to the nearby city of Rissani, which was the site of the prosperous kingdom of Sijilmassa between the 8th and 14th centuries. This kingdom thrived due to its control of trans-Saharan caravan routes, linking North Africa with sub-Saharan regions. While the dunes themselves do not have opening hours or admission fees, the tourism infrastructure in Merzouga operates year-round. Visitors should prepare for extreme temperature variations, bringing warm clothing for cold nights and protection from the sun during the day. This destination appeals to those seeking adventure and natural beauty, offering a profound connection to the Sahara’s harsh yet majestic environment.
