Errachidia
Administrative capital of Draa-Tafilalet gateway to Sahara desert
Errachidia is a city of strategic importance in southeastern Morocco and the main urban centre of the Draa-Tafilalet region's eastern side. Historically known as Ksar es-Souk, it was renamed Errachidia in the 20th century in honour of Moulay Rachid, the 17th-century sultan who founded the Alaouite state in Tafilalet. It lies in the valley of the Ziz river, which has supported agriculture in this arid region for centuries, while the Gheris river flows through the neighbouring valley to the west. The city's history is tied to the trans-Saharan trade routes and the control of the oases that dot the landscape. Today, it is a modern city with a growing population, acting as the administrative and commercial centre for the surrounding area.
The Ziz Valley is the best known sight, famous for its vast palm groves and lush greenery, which contrast sharply with the surrounding desert. Old ksour of mud brick stand among the palms, and small fields of barley, vegetables and henna are fed by traditional irrigation channels. Visitors can drive or cycle through the valley, stopping at viewpoints and villages, and the light is best in the early morning and late afternoon. To the north of the city, the Hassan Addakhil dam holds a lake that supplies water to the oasis, and the road toward Midelt passes through the dramatic Ziz Gorges and the old Légionnaire tunnel.
The nearby Todra Gorge and Dades Gorge are major tourist destinations accessible from Errachidia, offering dramatic canyon landscapes and hiking opportunities. A day trip to Todra Gorge from the desert side offers a striking contrast to the sand, and the Kelaat M'Gouna Rose Valley, in the Dadès area, is known for its rose cultivation. Further south, the dunes of Erg Chebbi near Merzouga draw people who want to ride camels or stay in desert camps, among them luxury camps with a refined setting at the foot of the dunes. The Moulay Ali Cherif Mausoleum near Merzouga is a local religious landmark, and visitors should be respectful of the site.
The city itself features a central market where locals trade dates, almonds and other agricultural products. Visitors can explore the traditional souks to experience local life and purchase handicrafts. Local date farms and the palm grove inside the city limits show how oasis agriculture works, and the Errachidia Souk is lively on market days. Errachidia City Park provides shade for a rest, and the Grand Mosque and Place Al Qods are the main civic landmarks in the centre. The Source Bleue de Meski, a spring-fed pool and palm oasis south of the city, is a popular stop for a swim in warm weather.
The Moulay Ali Cherif Airport provides air connectivity to major Moroccan cities, making Errachidia accessible for both business and leisure visitors. Getting to Errachidia is also possible by road from Ouarzazate and Midelt, with scenic drives through the Atlas Mountains. Activities in the region include visiting the palm groves, hiking in the nearby gorges and taking day trips to the desert edge. The climate is semi-arid, with hot summers and mild winters. The best time to visit is spring, from March to May, or autumn, from September to November, when the weather is mild and suitable for outdoor activities. Summer can be extremely hot, while winter nights can be cold. Accommodation options range from hotels to guesthouses, catering to visitors exploring the region.
