#4 of 4 in Tizi N'tichka

Tizi n'Tichka is a major mountain pass in Morocco’s High Atlas Mountains, linking Marrakesh to Ouarzazate. It serves as a gateway to the Sahara and is the highest major mountain pass in North Africa open to regular traffic. The name Tizi n'Tichka means "pass of the pastures" in Amazigh. While historically believed to be 2,260 meters, GPS measurements confirm the actual elevation is approximately 2,205–2,207 meters.

The current road was constructed by the French military in 1936 along an old caravan trail and is now part of National Route 9. The pass carries the N9 over the crest of the High Atlas, connecting Marrakech on the northern side with Ouarzazate and the pre-Sahara to the south. The climate varies significantly; the pass experiences snow from November through March, though it can remain warm year-round due to strong sun exposure.

For travelers, the drive through Tizi n'Tichka offers breathtaking views of rugged peaks and deep valleys. The landscape transitions from lush greenery in the north to arid, rocky terrain in the south. Wildlife sightings are rare, but the area is historically significant as the last known wild Barbary lion in Morocco was shot near the pass in 1942. There are no specific opening hours or admission fees, as it is a public road. The experience is one of dramatic natural beauty and historical resonance, providing a profound connection to the geography of the Atlas Mountains. It is an essential stop for those traveling between the imperial cities and the desert, offering a stark and awe-inspiring contrast in landscapes.
