Tizi N'tichka
High Atlas mountain pass connecting Marrakech and Ouarzazate
Tizi n'Tichka, a name often given in Berber as the 'Pass of the Thyme,' is a significant mountain pass in the High Atlas range, linking the city of Marrakech in the northwest to Ouarzazate in the southeast via the N9 national highway. Historically, this route was essential for the transhumance of Berber tribes and the transport of goods between the Atlantic coast and the Sahara. The pass lies on the boundary between the Al Haouz Province and the Ouarzazate Province, and the old Glaoui kasbah of Telouet, off the main road, recalls the powerful family that once controlled the caravan trade here.
The landscape is stark and majestic, featuring rugged peaks, deep valleys and traditional Berber villages perched on hillsides. On the northern side, the road climbs through pine and juniper slopes, passing small settlements and terraced fields, while on the south side the land turns dry and red, with kasbahs and palm-lined river valleys. The change in colour and vegetation across the summit is one of the most vivid in the country, and the sharp light makes it good for photography.
The drive through the pass is an experience in itself, with winding roads that offer wide views of the surrounding mountains. Key attractions include the viewpoints near the summit, where visitors can see the expanse of the Atlas Mountains and the shift to the desert plains below. Several cafés and stalls along the road sell tea, minerals and handicrafts, and they make good rest stops for drivers. Travelling slowly and avoiding the road after dark is wise.
Many visitors link the pass with the Kasbah of Ait Benhaddou, a famous fortified village on the southern side, close to Ouarzazate and often visited on the same trip. Further afield, hikers can reach other valleys of the High Atlas, such as the Ait Bouguemez valley, known as the 'Valley of Happiness,' although this is reached from the town of Azilal rather than directly from the pass. Local Amazigh communities in the area welcome visitors to learn about farming and village life, and short walks along rivers and terraces start near the road.
Activities in the area include photography, hiking, driving and exploring the local Berber communities. The road is well maintained but can be challenging due to steep gradients and sharp turns, and heavy traffic slows progress in summer. Getting to Tizi n'Tichka is typically done by car or bus from Marrakech, with the journey to the summit taking about two hours and the full crossing to Ouarzazate taking a few more. The best time to visit is during the spring (March to May) or autumn (September to November) when the weather is mild. Summer can be hot, and winter may bring snow and ice, making driving conditions hazardous and sometimes closing the road. Accommodation is limited at the pass itself, but there are options in nearby towns and villages, as well as in Ouarzazate. The crossing is an important part of any road trip through Morocco, giving a dramatic and memorable day on the road.
