Tinghir

Tinghir is a city in the Drâa-Tafilalet region of central Morocco, located south of the High Atlas and north of the Little Atlas. It is the capital of Tinghir Province and is renowned for its proximity to the Todgha Gorge, a dramatic canyon carved by the Todgha River through the mountains. The town's history is deeply rooted in its role as an oasis settlement and a strategic point on trade routes connecting the north of Morocco to the Sahara. Old ksour, fortified villages of earth and straw, stand among the palms, and the old Jewish quarter, once home to a large community of craftspeople, reminds visitors of the area's mixed past.

The Amazigh people have inhabited this region for centuries, maintaining traditions in agriculture, particularly date palm cultivation, and craftsmanship. Families farm small terraced plots under the palms, growing barley, alfalfa, almonds and vegetables with water from a network of channels. Silver jewellery, rugs and carpets are made in the area, and local cooperatives sell them directly. The oasis is best explored on foot or by bicycle, following shady paths between mud walls above the river.

The Todgha Gorge is the primary attraction, featuring towering limestone walls that can reach up to 300 metres in height. Spelled Todra Gorge on many maps, it narrows to a corridor only a few dozen metres wide, where the river runs across the road in places and the cliffs seem to close overhead. The gorge offers hiking trails that wind through narrow passages and open valleys, providing opportunities for rock climbing and photography. Climbers come for the bolted routes on the walls, while walkers prefer the paths that lead above the gorge into the mountains and nomad grazing lands. The light changes through the day, and the colours on the rock are best in the morning and late afternoon.

The nearby Todra Valley is known for its lush palm groves and traditional Berber villages, offering a glimpse into rural Moroccan life. In town, the Tinghir Central Market is one of the largest and most vibrant weekly markets in southern Morocco, where farmers and herders from the surrounding area come to trade livestock, spices, vegetables, clothes and household goods. It is lively, crowded and a good spot to see how daily commerce works. Visitors should shop with polite bargaining and a flexible schedule.

Activities in Tinghir include exploring the gorge, visiting local souks to buy handicrafts and produce, and taking day trips to the Dades Valley. The town also makes a base for excursions to the Erg Chebbi dunes in Merzouga, as well as to Boumalne Dades and the Dades Gorge along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs. Nearby excursions toward the Middle Atlas and High Atlas ranges are possible with local guides, who know the mountain routes and the nomad camps.

Getting to Tinghir is possible by road from Ouarzazate or Marrakech, with regular bus services available. The climate is semi-arid, with hot summers and mild winters. The best time to visit is spring, from March to May, or autumn, from September to November, when the weather is pleasant for outdoor activities. Summer can be extremely hot, while winter nights can be cold. Accommodation ranges from hotels to guesthouses, catering to visitors who wish to explore the natural beauty of the region, and many guesthouses sit in the palm grove or beside the gorge.
