Imlil

Imlil is a village in the High Atlas Mountains, known as the starting point for expeditions to Mount Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa at 4,167 metres. The village is inhabited primarily by the Amazigh (Berber) people, who have lived in this region for centuries. The history of Imlil is rooted in the pastoral traditions of the Berber tribes, who have adapted to the harsh mountain climate by raising livestock and farming terraced fields, using water brought by channels from the streams. The village has evolved from a remote agricultural settlement into a popular base for trekkers and mountaineers, and the road from the plain, paved in recent decades, has speeded that change.

Key attractions include the Toubkal National Park, established in 1942, which protects the flora and fauna of the High Atlas, with juniper, holm oak and walnut woodlands at lower levels and bare rock higher up. The park has trails that range from easy walks to challenging ascents. The summit of Mount Toubkal is the main draw, and the usual route takes two days, with an overnight stay at the Toubkal Refuge, a mountain hut below the summit. Walkers pass the small shrine at Sidi Chamharouch, a pilgrimage site set among boulders beside the river, where mules, tea stalls and paths meet. The final climb is steep and stony, and a guide is advisable, particularly early in the season when snow lingers.

Other activities include mountain biking, horseback riding, mule trekking and visiting nearby villages. A shorter walk from Imlil leads to Aroumd, or Armed, a hillside village with views up the valley, and to the pass of Tizi Mzik, which gives views across ridges and neighbouring valleys. The Valley of Happiness, Ait Bouguemez, lies much farther east in the Azilal region, and is a separate trip rather than a day out from Imlil, usually reached by a long drive. The landscape around Imlil is characterised by rugged peaks, deep gorges and lush valleys, and there are many routes of different lengths.

Local co-operatives and craft workshops sell carpets, pottery and woven goods, and the main street, little more than a lane of cafés, shops and guesthouses, is a good place to buy basic hiking supplies and ask about guides. Many families run guesthouses and restaurants, so the economy is closely tied to tourism and to farming. Visitors can enjoy traditional Berber meals, such as tagine and couscous, prepared with local ingredients, often served on a terrace with a mountain view. Walnuts, honey and fresh bread are everyday staples in the valley.

The September 2023 earthquake damaged many houses in Imlil and the neighbouring villages, and recovery has been gradual. Before visiting, check current local conditions, and prefer locally owned accommodation, guides and shops to support the community. Imlil also lies near the larger market town of Asni, which offers supplies and transport on set days.

Getting to Imlil is possible by car or bus from Marrakech, with shared taxis often running to Asni and from there to Imlil. The journey takes about 1.5 to 2 hours and offers scenic views of the Atlas Mountains. The best time to visit is during the spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) when the weather is mild and suitable for hiking. Summer can be hot during the day but cool at night, while winter brings snow and cold temperatures, making it challenging for inexperienced trekkers. Accommodation options range from basic guesthouses to more comfortable lodges, providing a range of experiences for visitors.
