Midelt

Midelt is a significant town in central Morocco, positioned strategically between the Middle Atlas and High Atlas mountain ranges. Its history is intertwined with the movement of people and goods across the Atlas mountains, and the site served as a resting point for caravans and merchants. The town was officially established in the early 20th century during the French colonial period, when mining at nearby sites and a military post helped it grow from a small settlement into a provincial capital. The route south from Midelt passes through the Ziz Gorges and the old Légionnaire tunnel before reaching Errachidia and the oasis towns. The road north climbs through cedar and oak forests toward Azrou and Ifrane. The town also makes a base for accessing mountain passes and tracks across the High Atlas, although the long Tizi n'Tichka crossing between Marrakech and Ouarzazate lies much farther west and is a separate journey.

Activities in Midelt include hiking, birdwatching and visiting local apple farms, particularly around harvest in autumn. Walks into the surrounding hills reveal nomad camps and small farms, and guides can organise longer routes up Jbel Ayachi. Minerals and fossils from the surrounding hills are sold at roadside stalls and shops, and visitors should buy from reputable sellers and check that items are not protected specimens.

The climate in Midelt is continental, with cold winters and mild summers. Snow is common in winter, and the area can be quite chilly, so warm clothes are essential. The best time to visit is during the spring and autumn months when the weather is mild and suitable for outdoor activities. Summer can be warm but pleasant due to the high altitude, while winter requires preparation for cold and snow. Getting to Midelt is possible by road from major cities like Fez, Meknes and Ouarzazate.
