UNESCO-listed coastal town with murals and seafood
A full day dedicated to wandering the pedestrian-only medina, admiring the famous murals, visiting historic sites, and enjoying fresh seafood by the Atlantic coast.
Arrival in Asilah
Arrive at Asilah train station (if coming from Tangier) or begin your walk from the main parking area. The town is compact and easily navigable on foot.
The Blue Gate (Bab Asilah)
Start your tour at the iconic 15th-century Moorish gate. This is the main entrance to the medina, featuring beautiful blue tiles and a glimpse into the whitewashed streets beyond.
Asilah Mural Project Walk
Wander through the narrow streets of the medina to view the world-famous murals. This long-running public art project transforms the white walls of the town into a canvas for international artists. Look for the vibrant colors against the stark white buildings.
Kasbah of Asilah
Visit the historic fortress located within the medina. Once a Portuguese stronghold, it now houses cultural centers and offers a quiet retreat from the bustling streets. Explore the ramparts and the small museum inside.
Lunch at the Corniche
Head down to the waterfront for lunch. Enjoy fresh grilled seafood (such as sardines or sea bass) at one of the many beachside restaurants or cafes overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.
Asilah Art Galleries
After lunch, explore the numerous art galleries housed in restored traditional buildings. Asilah is a hub for local and international artists, and the galleries offer a chance to see contemporary Moroccan art.
Artisan Workshops
Visit local pottery and craft workshops. Asilah is known for its blue-washed aesthetic, and you can watch artisans at work and perhaps purchase unique souvenirs directly from them.
Sidi Mansour Mosque
Visit the 15th-century Sidi Mansour Mosque. Note that non-Muslims may not be allowed inside the prayer hall, but the exterior architecture, including the square minaret, is worth viewing from the outside.
Relax at Asilah Beach
Spend some time relaxing on the sandy beach or walking along the promenade. The atmosphere is calm and artistic, offering a perfect contrast to the busy medina.
Sunset Viewpoints at the Kasbah
End your day at the Kasbah ramparts. This is the best spot to watch the sun set over the Atlantic Ocean, casting a golden glow on the white walls of the medina.
Dinner at Jemaa El Fna (Asilah)
Enjoy a traditional Moroccan dinner at a local restaurant near the port area. 'Jemaa El Fna' here refers to the coastal art gallery/public space vibe rather than the famous square in Marrakech, offering a relaxed dining atmosphere.
Where to stay: Asilah is often visited as a day trip from Tangier. If staying overnight, choose a traditional Riad or hotel within the medina for an authentic experience, or a beachfront hotel for ocean views.
Getting around: The medina is pedestrian-only. Use shared taxis or the ONCF train to arrive from Tangier. Once in Asilah, walking is the primary mode of transport.
