Casablanca Medina
Historic walled quarter in Morocco's largest city
The Old Medina of Casablanca offers a distinct contrast to the city’s modern, French-colonial architecture. While Casablanca is primarily known as Morocco’s economic hub and largest city, the medina preserves a glimpse into its earlier history as a Berber settlement and later the pirate port of Anfa. This historic district is smaller and less extensive than the medinas in Fes or Marrakech, reflecting Casablanca’s more recent rapid urbanization.
Visitors exploring the area will find narrow, winding streets lined with traditional shops selling textiles, spices, and household goods. The atmosphere is generally less chaotic than in other Moroccan cities, providing a more relaxed environment for walking and browsing. The central market area serves as a focal point for local commerce, where residents purchase fresh produce, meat, and fish.
A key cultural landmark within the medina is the Habous district, a planned urban area developed during the French protectorate that blends traditional Moroccan design with modern amenities. This area features artisan workshops, including leather tanneries and pottery studios, offering insight into local craftsmanship. The Hassan II Mosque, while technically on the edge of the medina, dominates the skyline and influences the surrounding neighborhood’s layout.
Access to the medina is free, and it is easily reachable from the city center via taxi or public transport. The area is best visited during daylight hours to fully appreciate the architectural details and shop interiors. While it may not offer the same level of historical depth as other Moroccan medinas, the Casablanca medina provides an authentic look at the daily life of locals and serves as a quiet retreat from the bustling business district. It is a practical stop for travelers seeking traditional goods and a sense of the city’s pre-modern roots.
