Azilal
High Atlas gateway to the Valley of Happiness and M'Goun rose valleys
Azilal is a city in the central High Atlas Mountains of Morocco, in the Beni Mellal-Khénifra region. It is the administrative capital of Azilal Province and a key stop for people exploring the interior of the Atlas range. The city's history is closely tied to the Berber tribes that have inhabited this region for centuries, preserving their language, customs and agricultural practices. In the surrounding villages, houses of stone and earth cling to the hillsides, and many families still practise seasonal movement of flocks between valley pastures and the high mountains.
Azilal is renowned for its role as a gateway to the Aït Bouguemez Valley, a high valley known for its landscapes, traditional stone villages and hospitality. Often called the Happy Valley, it is a broad green corridor of fields, walnut and apple trees, with mountain walls on both sides, and it is reached by road from the town of Azilal over a mountain pass and along the lake road. Visitors can stay in traditional guesthouses and hike through lush valleys and high mountain passes, with local guides arranging routes of a day or several days toward the peaks of the M'Goun massif.
The M'Goun region, located to the south and east, is known for its fields of wild roses, which are harvested to produce rose water and oil, a significant part of the local economy. The rose valleys of the Dadès area offer a unique cultural experience, particularly during the annual Rose Festival in May, when villages celebrate the harvest with music and processions. The M'Goun massif itself, the second highest range in the country after Toubkal, draws serious trekkers, and its gorges and ridges are best explored with a guide.
The city itself features a central market and makes a base for exploring the surrounding natural beauty, including the Oued El Abid gorge. The most famous short excursion is to the Ouzoud Waterfalls, a series of cascades dropping more than 100 metres into a green gorge in the foothills, where Barbary macaques watch from the trees and small boats take visitors below the falls. Nearby Bin el Ouidane Lake, formed by a large dam, adds a restful stretch of blue water among red hills and is popular for picnics.
Activities in Azilal include hiking, mountain biking and cultural tours of Berber villages. The region is also known for its traditional crafts, such as weaving and pottery, and highland cooperatives sell carpets and blankets directly to visitors. Local food is simple, with tagines, bread baked in village ovens, honey and walnuts, and a glass of mint tea is almost always offered to guests.
Getting to Azilal is possible by road from Beni Mellal or Ouarzazate, with regular bus services available. The climate is continental, with cold winters and warm summers. The best time to visit is during the spring (April to June) or autumn (September to October) when the weather is mild and suitable for outdoor activities. Summer can be hot in the valleys, while winter brings snow to the higher elevations and may close mountain roads. Accommodation ranges from basic guesthouses in the villages to more comfortable hotels in Azilal town.
