Beni Mellal City

Beni Mellal is a junction in Morocco's geography and culture, positioned at the edge of the Middle Atlas Mountains. It is the administrative capital of the Béni Mellal-Khenifra region, and it combines agricultural wealth with views of the mountains. The modern town traces its origins to 1688, when the Alaouite Sultan Moulay Isma'il established a kasbah (fortress) to secure the region. This foundation led to the development of Beni Mellal as a centre for trade and governance, a role it continues to play. The Kasbah of Ain Asserdoun, a 17th-century fortress on the hillside, is the best-known historic building, and parts of its walls and towers can still be seen. Another Ismaili-era fortress, the Kasbah Tadla, lies a short drive away on the Oum Er-Rbia River.

The city is surrounded by olive groves and fertile plains, reflecting its importance as an agricultural centre in north-central Morocco. Citrus, sugar beet and cereals grow on the irrigated plains of Tadla, fed by water from the dams. Springs at the foot of the mountain, such as Aïn Asserdoune, bring water to gardens and orchards, and a viewpoint above the springs gives a view across the city and the plain. Beni Mellal's farmland depends on the Oum Er-Rbia River, one of the longest in Morocco, flows past the area and supports farming, fishing and hydroelectric dams.

The main attractions of Beni Mellal lie in its immediate surroundings, which have some of Morocco's best natural scenery. The city is widely recognised as the gateway to the Ouzoud Falls, among the highest waterfalls in Africa. Located about 80 kilometres to the west, the Ouzoud Falls drop into a pool in a green gorge, surrounded by vegetation and Barbary macaques. This site attracts many visitors, and Beni Mellal is a useful base for exploring it. Additionally, the Bin el-Ouidane Dam creates a large reservoir, sometimes compared by promoters to a tropical lagoon, with blue water surrounded by rugged mountains, where visitors can swim, boat and picnic. Water levels vary with the seasons and rainfall, so conditions differ between years. The contrast between dry mountains and bright blue water gives the lake a memorable look.

Within Beni Mellal itself, visitors can explore the local souks, which are centres of daily life. The markets offer local produce, including olives, almonds and dairy products, giving insight into the region's agricultural economy. The city also has parks and public spaces where residents gather, giving a glimpse of contemporary Moroccan urban life. A small local museum introduces the cultural heritage of the area. The Kasbah, although largely historical, remains a symbol of the city's heritage. For nature lovers, the Middle Atlas forests around Beni Mellal are home to wildlife, including Barbary macaques and various bird species, and offer walking routes for birdwatchers and hikers.

Getting to Beni Mellal is convenient by road. The city is well connected by bus and car from major Moroccan cities. Marrakech is approximately three hours away, while Casablanca is about four hours to the north. Regular bus services operate from major hubs, making it accessible for independent visitors. For those driving, the route from Marrakech follows the N8 through the Atlas foothills, with views of the changing landscape. Accommodation options range from mid-range hotels to guesthouses, catering to both transit visitors and those wishing to stay longer to explore the region.

The best time to visit Beni Mellal is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). In these periods the weather is mild and pleasant, good for hiking and outdoor activities. Summers can be hot, particularly at lower elevations, while winters bring cooler temperatures and occasional snow to the higher peaks. Spring is especially rewarding, as the olive groves and surrounding mountains are green and in bloom, which brightens the landscape.
