Azrou

Azrou is a town located in the Middle Atlas mountains of Morocco, in the Ifrane Province of the Fès-Meknès region. It lies at an elevation of approximately 1,330 metres (some sources cite 1,250 metres), surrounded by mountains covered with evergreen holm oak and cedar forests. The town's history is deeply rooted in the Amazigh culture, and it remains a centre for Berber traditions and crafts. Its name means rock, after the large rock outcrop beside the town, and the surrounding area has long been a crossroads for shepherds moving livestock between summer and winter pastures.

Azrou is perhaps best known for the Cedar Forest of Azrou, a vast woodland that is home to a significant population of Barbary macaques, also known as Barbary apes. These monkeys are a protected species and a major attraction for visitors. The forest offers scenic hiking trails and opportunities to observe wildlife in their natural habitat. Some of the oldest trees are enormous, and one ancient cedar, known as the Gouraud Cedar, is a famous stop for walkers. Visitors should keep a respectful distance from the macaques and avoid feeding them, since human food harms the animals and makes them bolder.

Key attractions include the Cedar Forest itself, where visitors can hike and see the macaques, and the local market, which is famous for its traditional Amazigh crafts, including woollen carpets, pottery and jewellery. The craft centre in town has workshops where woodcarvers use cedar to make boxes, furniture and decorative panels, and carpets come in the rich patterns of the Middle Atlas. Buying from cooperatives is a good way to see how items are made and to support local producers.

The town also makes a base for exploring the surrounding mountains and the nearby city of Ifrane, known as 'Little Switzerland' for its alpine architecture and climate. Ifrane lies a short drive south, with tidy streets, gardens and a university, and the high lakes and waterfalls in the region, such as Aguelmame Azigza and the falls at Aïn Leuh, are within a couple of hours. Walks in the hills above Azrou give views over the forest, and in winter snow-covered slopes draw local families.

Activities in Azrou include hiking, birdwatching and visiting local cooperatives to learn about traditional crafts. The region is also known for its agricultural products, particularly olives and almonds, as well as apples, honey and dairy products. Cafés in the town centre serve mint tea and simple meals, and the evening square fills with residents.

Getting to Azrou is convenient via road from Fez or Meknes, with regular bus services available. The journey from Fez takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. The climate is temperate, with cold winters and mild summers. Snow is common in winter, adding to the scenic beauty of the landscape. The best time to visit is during the spring (April to June) or autumn (September to October) when the weather is mild and pleasant for outdoor activities. Summer can be warm, while winter is cold and snowy. Accommodation options include hotels and guesthouses that offer comfortable stays in a mountain setting.
