The Cedar Forest of Azrou is a vast natural reserve located in the Middle Atlas Mountains, situated approximately 90 kilometers from Fes. Covering more than 75,000 hectares at an elevation of over 1,600 meters, this ancient woodland is home to towering Atlas cedars that are estimated to be up to 1,000 years old. The forest serves as a critical habitat for the endangered Barbary macaque, which is North Africa’s only wild monkey species. Visitors often travel here specifically to observe these primates in their natural environment, though ethical observation is essential. Tourists must not feed the animals, as doing so disrupts their natural behavior and contributes to population decline.

The best times to visit for wildlife viewing are between 8:00–11:00 AM and 4:00–6:00 PM, with April to June offering the best chance to see infant macaques. The site is open to the public with no admission fee, although parking costs between 10–20 MAD. A typical visit requires two to three hours to explore the trails and observe the wildlife comfortably. The forest is accessible via self-drive, CTM bus, or guided day trips, making it a popular addition to itineraries starting from Fes or nearby Ifrane.

Beyond the wildlife, the area offers a serene atmosphere amidst the high-altitude landscape. The nearby town of Azrou, meaning "Great Rock," provides cultural context as an authentic Berber settlement. Visitors can also see the Ennour mosque, constructed from local cedar, which reflects the region’s deep connection to its natural resources. The combination of ancient trees, unique wildlife, and mountain scenery makes the Cedar Forest a significant destination for nature enthusiasts.
