Guelmim

Guelmim is a junction in southern Morocco, marking the transition from the more temperate north to the arid expanses of the Sahara. As the capital of the Guelmim-Oued Noun region, the city has historically been a resting point for caravans and traders moving between the coast and the desert interior. Its name is often linked to the camel, reflecting a long-standing role as a centre for camel breeding and trade. The city's population, recorded at 187,808 in the 2014 census, is a mix of Berber and Arab communities, bringing together several cultural traditions. The architecture and urban layout reflect its function as a regional hub, with wide avenues and traditional souks coexisting.

The primary attraction of Guelmim is its role as a gateway to the desert. The city is known for its weekly camel market, where camels are traded, offering visitors a rare glimpse of the traditional nomadic lifestyle. The market is not just a commercial centre but a cultural event, showing the skills of camel herders and the importance of these animals in the region's history. Camel numbers and market activity have changed over the years, so visitors should ask locally about the day and season before planning a visit. Beyond the market, the surrounding landscapes include palm groves that dot the area and provide shade and food, and oases such as Asrir and Abaynou lie close to the city.

The nearby Oued Noun river valley offers opportunities for hiking and birdwatching, with plants and animals adapted to the semi-arid climate. After winter rains, the valley can briefly turn green, and migratory birds appear around pools. The Guelmim Museum, officially the Musée de la Région de Guelmim-Oued Noun, presents the culture and history of the region, with displays on crafts, jewellery and nomad life. Several cultural centres also display artefacts related to the region's past, including items from the trans-Saharan trade.

Activities in Guelmim are largely centred on nature and culture. Desert excursions are a popular choice, with guided tours available to nearby dunes and oases, and some trips cross stony plains to remote camps for an overnight stay. These tours often include visits to Berber villages, allowing visitors to experience traditional hospitality and learn about local customs. Mint tea is served in almost every house and shop, and guests should expect to be offered several glasses.

The city also makes a starting point for trips to the Atlantic coast. The long beach known as Plage Blanche lies to the southwest, and the coastal towns to the north, such as Sidi Ifni and Mirleft, offer water sports and relaxation, while the far south coast around Dakhla is a much longer journey. The Fort Bou Jerif, a ruined French-era fort in the hills, offers wide views for those who like to explore remote places by 4x4.

Getting to Guelmim is primarily by road or air. The city is connected to major Moroccan cities like Marrakech and Casablanca by long-distance buses and flights. The journey from Marrakech by road takes approximately 6-7 hours, traversing the Atlas Mountains and descending into the desert plains. Guelmim Airport offers domestic flights, which helps those who prefer to avoid the long drive. Within the city, taxis and buses are the main modes of transport. Accommodation options include hotels and guesthouses, ranging from basic to mid-range, catering to people passing through or staying to explore the region.

The best time to visit Guelmim is during the cooler months, from October to April. During this period, temperatures are moderate, making outdoor activities and desert excursions more comfortable. Summers can be extremely hot, with temperatures often exceeding 40°C, which can be challenging for travel. The winter months offer mild days and cool nights, ideal for exploring the desert and coastal areas. Visitors should be prepared for the arid climate and bring suitable clothing, a hat and sunscreen.
