Practical Information

Chefchaouen is best visited during spring (March to May) or autumn (September to November) when temperatures are mild, ranging from 15°C to 25°C. Summer can be uncomfortably hot for walking the steep, cobblestone medina streets, while winter brings cold nights and potential rain. To reach Chefchaouen, take a bus from Tangier or Tetouan, as direct connections from major cities like Casablanca or Marrakech are rare and require transfers. Once in town, the medina is entirely pedestrianized, so you will walk everywhere. For nearby attractions like the Akchour waterfalls, consider hiring a local guide or joining a small group tour, as public transport to these natural sites is limited and irregular. Accommodation ranges from budget-friendly hostels to luxury riads. Staying within the medina offers an immersive cultural experience but can be noisy at night; for a quieter stay, choose lodging just outside the main gates, such as near Place Outa El-Hammam. Many travelers prefer traditional riads with rooftop terraces for sunset views of the Rif Mountains. Budget-wise, Chefchaouen is moderately priced. Daily costs for a mid-range traveler typically include €30–€50 for accommodation, €10–€15 for food, and variable costs for tours. Cash is essential, as many small shops, cafes, and taxis in the medina do not accept credit cards. ATMs are available in the main square, but it is wise to withdraw larger amounts during the day to avoid running out of cash in the evening. Pack comfortable, sturdy walking shoes with good grip, as the medina’s steep, uneven cobblestones are challenging for heels or smooth soles. Bring layers, including a light jacket or fleece, as mountain weather can change rapidly. A scarf is useful for modesty when visiting mosques or rural areas and for protection against dust. Essential items include a reusable water bottle (use filtered water), sunscreen, and a power adapter. Respect local customs by dressing modestly, especially in the medina, and always ask permission before photographing locals. Finally, learn a few basic Arabic or French phrases, as English proficiency varies among shopkeepers and service staff.
