Blue medina, waterfalls, and mountain views in one day
A comprehensive one-day exploration of Chefchaouen, starting with a traditional breakfast, wandering the iconic blue medina, visiting the natural Ras El Ma spring, and ending with panoramic views from the Spanish Mosque at sunset.
Traditional Moroccan Breakfast
Start your day with a hearty breakfast at a local café in the medina. Enjoy bissara (fava bean soup), msemen (flatbread), fresh mint tea, and fresh orange juice to fuel up for the day.
Explore the Blue Medina
Wander through the narrow, blue-washed streets of the 15th-century medina. This is the heart of Chefchaouen, offering incredible photo opportunities, artisanal shops selling ceramics and textiles, and a glimpse into local life.
Place Outa el-Hammam
Visit the main square of the medina, named for the historic hammams. It is a vibrant cultural hub where locals gather, surrounded by cafes and shops. Great for people-watching and soaking in the atmosphere.
Ras El Ma Spring
Walk to the northern edge of the medina to see the natural Rif Mountain spring. Watch water cascading over stone terraces into the river below. It is a refreshing and picturesque spot, often less crowded than the main square.
Lunch in the Medina
Enjoy a traditional lunch at a rooftop restaurant or a local tagine house within the medina. Try lamb tagine with prunes or chicken pastilla. Many spots offer views of the blue streets.
Browse the Souks
Spend the early afternoon browsing the traditional souks. Look for handmade crafts, leather goods, spices, and the famous blue pottery. Haggling is expected and part of the experience.
Grand Mosque (Great Mosque)
Visit the 15th-century Grand Mosque located at Place Outa Hammam. While non-Muslims cannot enter the prayer hall, the exterior architecture and the surrounding square are significant historical landmarks.
Walk to Spanish Mosque
Take a leisurely walk uphill from the medina towards the Spanish Mosque. The path offers increasingly beautiful views of the blue city and the surrounding Rif Mountains.
Spanish Mosque Sunset View
Arrive at the Spanish Mosque (Mosque of the Spaniards) for the golden hour. Although the mosque itself is abandoned, the gardens and ruins offer the most iconic panoramic view of Chefchaouen. Perfect for sunset photography.
Dinner with a View
Return to the medina for dinner. Choose a restaurant with a terrace to enjoy the evening ambiance. Try a variety of Moroccan mezze and a main course like kefta tagine.
Where to stay: Stay within the Medina of Chefchaouen for the most authentic experience. Look for a traditional Riad or a hotel with a rooftop terrace for views of the blue streets.
Getting around: The entire itinerary is walkable. The medina is compact, and the walk to the Spanish Mosque is a moderate uphill hike. No car or public transport is needed for this day.
