3-day trekking and Berber culture in the Atlas Mountains
Travel from Marrakech to Imlil, settle into accommodation, and take a gentle valley walk to acclimatize to the altitude and observe local agricultural life.
Shared Taxi from Marrakech to Imlil
Depart from Bab Doukkala or your riad in Marrakech. Take a shared taxi (Caisse de Transport) through the Haouz plain and Moulay Brahim gorge. The drive is scenic but winding.
Arrival at Imlil Village Center
Arrive in Imlil (1,740m). Drop luggage at your guesthouse. Explore the main square, grab a mint tea, and orient yourself. The village is the gateway to the High Atlas.
Valley Walk to Ait Oufella Base
A flat, easy walk along the river path through walnut and cherry orchards. Observe traditional irrigation systems (seguias) and Berber farming hamlets. This is a low-intensity acclimatization hike.
Lunch at a Local Tea House
Return to Imlil for lunch. Enjoy a simple meal of msemen (flatbread), eggs, or a light tagine at a local tea house overlooking the valley.
Visit Berber Co-ops and Workshops
Visit local women's co-ops to see traditional argan oil production, carpet weaving, or pottery. This supports the local economy and offers cultural insight.
Rest and Stargazing Preparation
Return to your lodge/gite. Rest to adjust to altitude. Prepare for the evening meal and stargazing.
Where to stay: Stay at a traditional Berber guesthouse or lodge in Imlil Village (e.g., Imlil Mountain Lodge or similar). Booking in advance is recommended.
Getting around: Shared taxi from Marrakech (approx. 1.5 hours). Local transport is primarily walking.
A moderate day hike exploring the upper valley, visiting traditional Berber villages, and enjoying panoramic views of Mount Toubkal.

Hearty breakfast with bread, jam, honey, and tea to fuel the day's hike.
Hike to Ait Oufella and Berber Villages
Hike up the valley towards Ait Oufella. The trail passes through traditional stone Berber villages. The scenery includes terraced fields and views of the Toubkal massif. This is a moderate hike with some elevation gain.
Visit Sidi Chahba Shrine
On the return route or a side path, visit the mythic Sidi Chahba shrine. It is a significant spiritual site in the High Atlas, associated with local legends.
Mule Trekking Route Exploration
Walk along the mule tracks that connect the villages. You may see locals transporting goods. This offers a glimpse into traditional mountain logistics.
Toubkal National Park Visitor Center
Stop by the park information point to learn about the flora and fauna of the High Atlas. Guides can be hired here for multi-day treks.
Sunset Tea and Relaxation
Return to Imlil village. Enjoy a final mint tea with a view of the mountains as the sun sets.
Where to stay: Stay at the same guesthouse in Imlil.
Getting around: Walking only. Ensure you have sturdy hiking boots.
Option A: Early start for a summit attempt of Mount Toubkal (requires guide and prior acclimatization). Option B: Leisurely morning, souvenir shopping, and return to Marrakech.
Early Breakfast (Summit Day Only)
High-energy breakfast if attempting the summit. If not, sleep in.
Mount Toubkal Summit Attempt
Start early to ascend Mount Toubkal (4,167m). This is a strenuous hike. A local guide is mandatory. The route goes via the Toubkal Base Camp. Requires good fitness and acclimatization.
Descent and Return to Imlil
Descend from the summit or refuge back to Imlil. Expect fatigue.
Final Souvenir Shopping
Buy local crafts, argan oil, or spices as souvenirs before departure.
Return Taxi to Marrakech
Take the shared taxi back to Marrakech. Arrive in the evening.
Where to stay: Check out of guesthouse. No accommodation needed for the night.
