The region’s primary draw is its unique geography. The Dakhla Lagoon, one of the largest in the world, offers calm, shallow waters perfect for windsurfing, kitesurfing, and birdwatching, while the surrounding Erg Chebbi-like dunes provide endless opportunities for quad biking and camel treks. Nature lovers can explore the nearby Blue Eye and White Eye oases, where freshwater springs emerge amidst the desert, and visit the flamingo colonies that flock to the lagoon’s edges. Culturally, the region reflects a mix of Sahrawi, Moroccan, and Spanish influences, visible in the local cuisine, which features fresh seafood and desert staples like dates and couscous. The best time to visit is between October and April, when temperatures are mild and ideal for outdoor activities. Summer months can be excessively hot and windy. Travelers typically fly into Dakhla Airport or drive north from Laâyoune via the scenic coastal road. Within the region, renting a car or using local taxis is the most practical way to explore the dispersed attractions and remote desert camps.
