Al Hoceima National Park (Day Trip)
Unspoilt Rif mountains and Mediterranean marine park
Al Hoceima National Park offers a striking natural contrast to the coastal resort town of Saidia, located approximately 150 kilometers to the south. Established in 2004 and managed by the Haut-Commissariat des eaux et forêts et de la lutte contre la désertification, this IUCN Category II park spans approximately 470–480 km², combining terrestrial and marine environments. The terrestrial section covers 284 km² of the rugged Ibaqouyen Rif mountain range, while the marine area includes 196 km² of the Mediterranean.
For travelers undertaking a day trip, the park presents an unspoilt landscape characterized by high limestone cliffs, wild rocky coastlines, and mountainous interiors. The area is one of the most pristine coastal sites on Morocco’s north coast, offering a serene escape from the developed beaches of Saidia. Visitors can observe diverse flora, including 110 species of vascular plants such as the barbary thuya, Aleppo pine, and wild olive trees. The park’s five communes—Bni Boufrah, Senada, Rouadi, Izemmouren, and Ait Kamara—provide a glimpse into rural Rif life.
The experience is defined by its natural beauty and tranquility, offering opportunities for photography and ecological appreciation. The proximity to the Mediterranean allows for combined coastal and mountain activities. Travelers should note that the park’s remote location requires planning for transportation from Saidia. The site serves as a vital conservation area, preserving the unique biodiversity of the Rif region. It provides a peaceful environment for those seeking to connect with Morocco’s wilder coastal heritage, distinct from the resort atmosphere of the nearby towns.
