Chellah Necropolis
Roman ruins and Merinid tombs in Salé
Perched on a hill overlooking the Bou Regreg River, the Chellah Necropolis in Salé is a magical site where the remains of the Roman and Merinid empires coexist in perfect harmony. As visitors pass through the large octagonal Merinid gate, they enter a fairy-tale world shrouded in mystery, characterized by overgrown gardens, ancient columns, and the haunting silence of history. The site bears witness to Morocco’s rich past, serving as a necropolis for the Merinid sultans and their families.
The Chellah is open daily, with hours varying by season: from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. in winter (October 1 to March 31) and 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. in summer (April 1 to September 30).
