Chouara Tannery
Fes' oldest tannery with historic dye pits
The Chouara Tannery in Fes is one of the oldest and largest tanneries in the city, representing a significant part of Morocco’s traditional leather industry. Located within the historic medina, it offers a unique, albeit intense, cultural experience. The optimal viewing spot is the terrace at shop number 10, which provides the best balcony view over the tanneries without shadows.
The site is open daily from 9 AM to 7 PM, with workers most active between 9:30 AM and 2 PM. While the view is technically free, an "expected tip" of 20–50 MAD per person is customary. Visitors should be aware that "free" views often come with sales pitches for leather goods. It is recommended to visit early in the morning when the dyes are fresh and the smell is less intense. To manage the strong odor, visitors are advised to bring fresh mint to hold under their noses.
The atmosphere is bustling and sensory-rich, characterized by the vibrant colors of the dye pits and the sounds of labor. However, visitors must be cautious of scams or being led into circles within the medina maze. For travelers, the Chouara Tannery offers a glimpse into centuries-old craftsmanship. It is an essential stop for those interested in the material culture of Fes, providing a stark contrast to the city’s more serene architectural landmarks. The experience is memorable for its visual impact and historical significance, despite the challenging sensory environment.
