Fes el-Bali (The Old Medina)

Fes el-Bali, meaning "Old Fes," is the oldest district of Fez and a UNESCO World Heritage Site inscribed in 1981. Founded as the capital of the Idrisid dynasty between 789 and 808 AD, it retains its pre-modern urban layout, including market streets, narrow alleys, and historic city walls. This sprawling medina is one of the largest car-free urban areas in the world, offering visitors an immersive journey into medieval Islamic architecture and culture.

Key landmarks within the medina include the al-Qarawiyyin University, centered around a 9th-century mosque, which is recognized as one of the world’s oldest degree-granting universities. The Chouara Tanneries are another major attraction, where visitors can observe the traditional leather-tanning process from rooftop terraces. The area is also home to numerous mosques, madrasas, and souks, reflecting its enduring significance as a center of religious and economic life.

Although it ceased to be the political capital in favor of Marrakesh and later Fes Jdid, Fes el-Bali remains a vital cultural hub. The medina is open to the public at all times, with no specific entrance fee for the district itself, though individual sites like the tanneries or madrasas may charge admission. Navigating the narrow, winding streets can be challenging, as many alleys are pedestrian-only and lack clear signage. Visitors are encouraged to hire a local guide to fully appreciate the historical context and avoid getting lost.
