Koutoubia Mosque

The Koutoubia Mosque anchors the western edge of the Marrakech medina, its 77-meter minaret piercing the sky as a defining feature of the city’s skyline. Constructed in the late 12th century by Almohad Caliph Yaqub al-Mansur, this architectural landmark represents a significant example of Almohad design. The structure’s name derives from the nearby market for booksellers, known as koutoubi, reflecting the area’s historical role as a center for manuscripts.

Visitors can explore the exterior grounds and the adjacent gardens, which are open to the public without charge. The interior of the mosque remains closed to non-Muslims, but the exterior architecture offers a striking visual experience. The gardens provide a cool, shaded retreat, particularly useful during the hot summer months when temperatures can rise sharply. The layout allows for a peaceful walk, with the minaret’s sandstone facade glowing warmly in the late afternoon light.
