Souss-Massa Region

Taghazout is a coastal village in the Souss-Massa region of Morocco, situated just north of Agadir. Historically, it was a small fishing community inhabited by the Berber people, whose culture and traditions remain evident in the local way of life. Boats were pulled up on the sand, nets were mended by hand and the village's income came from the sea and from small plots in the hills. Even today, the old core near the beach keeps this modest feel, while newer building on the slopes shows how quickly the place has changed.

The village's transformation into a global surf hotspot began in the 1990s, driven by its consistent swells and favourable wind conditions. Along this stretch of the Atlantic, long groundswells from the north arrive for much of the year, and a series of rocky points break cleanly along the coast. Today, Taghazout is a vibrant hub for water sports and wellness, blending traditional Moroccan hospitality with a modern, international community. Cafés serve tagines next to smoothies, and surf shops sit beside small grocery stores.

Key attractions include Taghazout Beach, the main stretch of sand in front of the village, known for its powerful breaks and the day-long activity of surfers and families. The nearby Anchor Point, a world-famous surf spot on a rocky headland just north of the village, attracts experienced surfers from around the globe. Its long right-hand wave breaks over a reef, so it is best left to those with experience, and it is just as interesting to watch from the cliff above. The name is said to come from anchors from an old fishing operation that once lay at the point.

The coast also has several smaller beaches and surf spots, such as Tamraght and Banana Beach, often called Bananers, which offer calmer waters suitable for beginners. Surf schools and rental shops operate along this stretch, giving lessons and hiring boards by the hour or day. Further afield, other points and beach breaks are within easy reach by taxi or van, so a guide can match a spot to the day's swell.

Activities in Taghazout include surfing, yoga and meditation, with numerous schools and centres offering classes and retreats. The village also has a local souk and small shops where artisans sell handmade crafts, jewellery and textiles. A walk along the coastal path leads to quiet hills and viewpoints with panoramic views of the coast, and the sunsets are among the best reasons to climb to a rooftop. Hammams and massage rooms add a restful end to a day in the water, and Argan oil products are widely sold.

Getting to Taghazout is convenient by road from Agadir, with regular buses and taxi options available. The journey takes approximately 30 minutes. The climate is Mediterranean in character, with warm, dry summers and mild winters. The best time to visit is spring, from March to May, or autumn, from September to November, when the weather is pleasant and the waves are consistent. Summer can be hot and windy, while winter is mild but may bring rain and the largest swells. Accommodation ranges from budget-friendly hostels and guesthouses to luxury villas and surf camps, catering to a wide range of guests, and booking ahead is wise in peak surf months.
