The Chellah
Roman ruins and Marinid tombs in Rabat
The Chellah is an archaeological site located on the banks of the Bou Regreg River in Rabat, offering a unique blend of ancient Roman ruins and medieval Islamic history. Originally a Phoenician trading post, the site later became the Roman city of Sala Colonia. Visitors can explore the remaining columns, arches, and mosaics that date back to this period. In the 14th century, the Marinid dynasty built a necropolis here, adding mausoleums and gardens that reflect Islamic architectural styles.
The site is open daily, with hours varying by season. During winter, from October 1 to March 31, it operates from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. In summer, from April 1 to September 30, the hours extend to 8:00 p.m. During Ramadan, the site closes earlier at 3:00 p.m. Admission offers several options, including normal entrance for independent access and group entry for parties of 25 or more. A guided tour with a professional mediator is available by reservation, though this package excludes entry fees and audio guides. Moroccan citizens and foreign residents in Morocco receive a 50% discount with valid proof.
For visitors, the Chellah provides a peaceful environment to explore historical layers. The grounds are well-maintained, featuring gardens that contrast with the stone ruins. The site is particularly known for its population of sacred ibises, which nest in the ancient structures. This natural element adds a distinctive character to the experience. The Heritage Interpretation Centre, included in the CIP entrance ticket, offers additional context, though it is currently unavailable. The site is accessible to most travelers and serves as an educational stop that highlights Rabat’s rich historical timeline.
