Ida-Ou-Tanane

Ida-Ou-Tanane is a prefecture in the Souss-Massa region of Morocco, named after the Ida Ou Tanane tribe, a Berber confederation that has historically inhabited the area. The prefecture's capital is Agadir, which serves as the economic engine of the region. The history of the area is deeply rooted in Berber traditions, with the tribe playing a significant role in the region's social and political structure for centuries, and its villages in the Western High Atlas kept their own customs, dialect and shared granaries.

Agadir itself was devastated by an earthquake in 1960, leading to its complete reconstruction with modern, earthquake-resistant architecture. This event transformed the city into a planned resort destination, with wide avenues, a long seafront promenade and low buildings. The old hilltop fort above the city, the Kasbah of Agadir, survived only as ruins, but it provides historical context and panoramic views over the bay and the port. Visitors will find little else of the pre-1960 town, which makes the surviving walls all the more meaningful.

Key attractions in the prefecture include the beaches of Agadir, such as the main beach and the Marina, which offer water sports and dining. The seafront runs for several kilometres, with cafés, restaurants and a lively evening scene in the warm months. Beyond the city, the prefecture includes rural communes where visitors can experience traditional Berber life, visit local souks and explore the argan oil cooperatives, many of them run by women. Watching nuts being cracked by hand and the oil being pressed explains why argan is a valued product in the region.

The inland valleys are the highlight for those with time. The Honey Road in Ida-Ou-Tanane is a scenic route that winds through the Western High Atlas, passing apiaries, terraced fields and villages that sell local honey. Another scenic valley, with rock pools and palm trees, lies in the same hills north of Agadir and is popular for walks and swimming in the warm season. Roads are narrow and hilly, so a local driver or guide is helpful, and an early start avoids midday heat.

The Souss-Massa National Park, located to the south, is a protected area known for its biodiversity, including the endangered northern bald ibis, and for its coastal wetlands where flamingos and other migratory birds gather. It forms part of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in the wider Arganeraie region, and it is a good destination for birdwatching and quiet walks along the dunes and cliffs.

Activities in Ida-Ou-Tanane include surfing, particularly in nearby Taghazout, hiking in the Anti-Atlas foothills and the Western High Atlas, and cultural tours of Berber villages. Golf, cycling and desert-edge excursions are also offered by operators in Agadir, and the city's souk, Souk El Had, is a large covered market where residents buy everything from spices to household goods.

Getting to the prefecture is convenient via Agadir-Al Massira Airport, which connects to major international and domestic destinations. The region is also accessible by road from Marrakech. The best time to visit is spring, from March to May, or autumn, from September to November, when the weather is warm and sunny but not excessively hot. Summer can be hot, while winter is mild and pleasant. Accommodation ranges from luxury beachfront resorts in Agadir to guesthouses in rural areas, and visitors can combine a base on the coast with a night in a mountain village.
