Tiznit
Historic walled town in Souss-Massa known for silver jewelry and desert gateway
Tiznit is a town in the Souss-Massa region of Morocco, situated on the Atlantic coast. Its history dates back to 1881 when Sultan Hassan I founded it as a military garrison to consolidate his control over the Souss region and protect the trade routes connecting the coast to the interior. The town was designed with a grid layout and surrounded by black walls, a distinctive feature that sets it apart from other Moroccan cities. These walls, made from local materials, were intended to provide defense and reflect the town's military origins. Tiznit is famous for its silver jewelry, particularly the heavy, ornate pieces worn by Amazigh women. The local artisans are renowned for their craftsmanship, and the souk is a vibrant place to observe and purchase these traditional items. Key attractions include the medina with its black walls, the main square (Place Tiznit), and the nearby beaches. The town also serves as a starting point for exploring the Anti-Atlas mountains and the desert regions to the south. Activities in Tiznit include visiting the silver jewelry workshops, exploring the medina, and taking day trips to the coastal areas and the nearby village of Sidi Ifni. The region is also known for its argan oil production, and visitors can tour cooperatives to learn about the process. Getting to Tiznit is convenient via road from Agadir, with regular bus services available. The journey takes approximately 45 minutes to an hour. The climate is semi-arid, with mild winters and warm summers. The best time to visit is during the spring (March to May) or autumn (September to November) when the weather is pleasant for outdoor activities. Summer can be hot, while winter is mild. Accommodation options include hotels and guesthouses that offer a comfortable stay in a historic setting.
